COMMS 101: SPEAK CLEARLY, OPERATE SMOOTHLY
On short-range radios within squads, voice procedure is not needed. Chat normally.
On long-range radios between squads or to platoon HQ, simple voice procedure is required to prevent the busy net from becoming too cluttered and to make things easier to manage.
Some Important Keywords:
Break, Break, Break: You are interrupting in the middle of communication because you have an emergency.
Over: Your message is finished.
Out: All conversation is finished, the channel is clear for others to use.
Say Again: Re-transmit your message.
Negative – Same as “No”
Affirmative – Same as “Yes”. Avoid “yup” or “nope” as they are difficult to hear.
Go Ahead – You are ready to receive transmission.
Stand-by – You acknowledge the other party, but I am unable to respond immediately.
Some examples below:
Always initiate a conversation with “hello [your callsign], this is [my callsign]”.
Further messages are prefixed with just your callsign (so that everyone knows who is the person talking), not the addressee’s callsign.
